The webinar will discuss the challenges surrounding the underrepresentation of Black/African American (BAA) men in dentistry and dental education and present a rationale for anti-racism strategies to address these challenges.
In September 2022, ADEA released a special issue of its peer-reviewed journal, Journal of Dental Education, focusing entirely on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in dental education. One of the 23 articles tackled what many consider the proverbial elephant in the room: Where are the Black male dentists, dental students and dental educators? This webinar features the three authors of that article, “Illuminating light in the darkness: Black/African-American men in dental education and strategies for change.” The webinar will discuss the challenges surrounding the underrepresentation of Black/African American (BAA) men in dentistry and dental education and present a rationale for anti-racism strategies to address these challenges.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the importance of both mentorship and systems change to guide BAA men into and through dental careers.
- Assess the need for more direct attention to how dental school humanistic environments support BAA men, commit human and financial resources for program development and use data-driven metrics to assess those programs longitudinally.
- Discuss the promotion of oral health equity and its demands for more than simply appreciating BAA men’s contributions, but an actionable commitment to creating and advancing opportunities that ensure their success.

With the recent addition to Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Standard 2-24d that “graduates must be competent in health promotion and diseases prevention, including caries management,” there is now a requirement to create mechanisms that demonstrate this competency.
With the recent addition to Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Standard 2-24d that “graduates must be competent in health promotion and diseases prevention, including caries management,” there is now a requirement to create mechanisms that demonstrate this competency.
While dental caries is the most common dental disease, previous CODA requirements and dental schools, in general, have focused only on the surgical treatment to excise caries and restore the remaining tooth structure. Caries is a multi-factorial disease, and management of caries requires individual risk assessment and risk-based treatment planning. Reassessment of caries risk also must be performed over time to reinforce and reevaluate patients’ compliance and response to the management plan proposed. Caries management competency involves the evaluation of student’s ability to develop and perform these complex critical thinking skills. Unlike most single-event, competency evaluations, demonstrating these skills requires different strategies. This complimentary webinar will provide examples of how five dental schools have met this requirement using systematic and creative ways.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the elements of a caries management competency that both encourages and effectively evaluates student ability to assess individual patient risk, develop an appropriate treatment plan and reassess the caries risk and management plan over time.
- Develop a competency for caries management at individual level using best practices from other institutions.
- Identify what criteria lead to a successful caries management competency.
