This installment of The Pulse of Progress: Legacy Builders in Oral Health speaker series examines how stigma, chronic stress, and prior negative healthcare encounters influence oral health behaviors, trust, and outcomes, particularly among communities that have historically faced barriers to access and representation. Participants will gain insight into how dental education and training can intentionally equip clinicians to recognize these dynamics, strengthen provider–patient relationships, and support more equitable oral health outcomes across diverse communities.

As the dental profession continues to evolve, persistent gaps remain in who enters the profession, who advances, and whose contributions are most visible and valued. These gaps are shaped not only by individual experiences, but by broader structural and social forces, including limited exposure to dentistry, restricted access to professional networks, and geographic and economic constraints that influence educational and care pathways. These same forces also shape patient experiences within oral health systems.

This installment of The Pulse of Progress: Legacy Builders in Oral Health speaker series examines how stigma, chronic stress, and prior negative healthcare encounters influence oral health behaviors, trust, and outcomes, particularly among communities that have historically faced barriers to access and representation. Framed through a patient-centered and context-responsive lens, the session explores why many individuals delay or avoid dental care, experience heightened anxiety, or develop long-term distrust of providers, and how these patterns contribute to persistent oral health disparities.

Taking a population-level perspective, the session highlights how social and environmental factors intersect with oral health education and clinical practice, influencing preventive care engagement, health behaviors, and disease risk. Participants will gain insight into how dental education and training can intentionally equip clinicians to recognize these dynamics, strengthen provider–patient relationships, and support more equitable oral health outcomes across diverse communities.

The Pulse of Progress: Legacy Builders in Oral Health Speaker Series is designed to amplify the significant yet underrecognized contributions, challenges and successes of voices that have been historically eclipsed within the oral health field. This series responds to those realities by creating space for thoughtful dialogue, connection and shared learning. Through meaningful conversations and expert insights, this series aims to dismantle these barriers, highlight pathways, foster a sense of community and inspire future leaders in the oral profession.

    Learning Objectives

Explain how stigma, chronic stress, and prior healthcare experiences influence patient engagement, trust, and oral health behaviors, with implications for teaching and clinical supervision.

    • Explain how stigma, chronic stress and prior health care experiences influence patient engagement, trust and oral health behaviors, with implications for teaching and clinical supervision.
    • Describe how social and environmental factors intersect with oral health education and clinical training to affect preventive care engagement and disease risk.
    • Assess the relevance of these dynamics for curriculum design, learner assessment and provider–patient communication in educational settings.
    • Identify instructional and practice-based strategies that faculty can integrate into teaching and clinical training to strengthen patient engagement and oral health outcomes.

This session of The Pulse of Progress: Legacy Builders in Oral Health speaker series moves beyond introductory awareness to examine dentistry’s evolving role in supporting and advocating for survivors of human trafficking, an often unseen population whose oral health needs frequently fall outside traditional care pathways. Through a moderated discussion, dental professionals engaged in clinical practice, education, forensics, and survivor advocacy will share lessons from frontline and systems-level work, highlighting ethical complexity, interprofessional collaboration, and sustainable approaches to survivor-responsive care.

Despite continued progress in dental education and practice, access to care, professional advancement, and recognition within the field remain uneven, particularly for individuals and communities affected by institutional and social barriers. These forces shape not only who enters and advances within dentistry, but also how oral health professionals engage with complex patient needs and social realities in clinical and educational settings.

This session of "The Pulse of Progress: Legacy Builders in Oral Health" speaker series moves beyond introductory awareness to examine dentistry’s evolving role in supporting and advocating for survivors of human trafficking, an often unseen population whose oral health needs frequently fall outside traditional care pathways. Through a moderated discussion, dental professionals engaged in clinical practice, education, forensics, and survivor advocacy will share lessons from frontline and systems-level work, highlighting ethical complexity, interprofessional collaboration, and sustainable approaches to survivor-responsive care.

By centering voices engaged in frontline advocacy, education, and policy work, the session highlights how oral health professionals can expand pathways for engagement, strengthen interprofessional networks, and contribute meaningfully to public health and human rights efforts. Participants will explore practical strategies for integrating survivor-responsive approaches into education, clinical practice, and institutional leadership, reinforcing dentistry’s role as a critical partner in addressing complex social determinants of health.

"The Pulse of Progress: Legacy Builders in Oral Health" speaker series is designed to amplify the significant yet underrecognized contributions, challenges and successes of voices that have been historically eclipsed within the oral health field. This series responds to those realities by creating space for thoughtful dialogue, connection and shared learning. Through meaningful conversations and expert insights, this series aims to dismantle these barriers, highlight pathways, foster a sense of community and inspire future leaders in the oral profession.

    Learning Objectives

    • Assess how trauma and prior health care experiences influence patient engagement, trust and treatment outcomes, and identify implications for dental education and clinical instruction.
    • Examine oral health education’s role within multidisciplinary efforts to support survivors of human trafficking, including ethical considerations and systems-level responsibilities relevant to training future oral health professionals.
    • Identify educational and institutional strategies that strengthen collaboration with external partners and prepare learners for complex patient care scenarios.
    • Apply survivor-responsive principles to curriculum design, clinical supervision or program leadership to support effective patient care and professional practice.

Join us in this webinar as we bridge the gap between feedback and meaningful educational innovation.

    Description:

As dental education continues to evolve in response to dynamic oral health landscapes, curriculum reviews play a critical role in ensuring programs remain relevant, rigorous and responsive. This webinar will provide an in-depth look at the different types of curricula used in dental education programs and examine the variety of curriculum review processes identified through our analysis of institutional data. We will highlight who participates in curriculum reviews, what tools and data sources are used, the role of key stakeholders and how findings are synthesized to guide meaningful reform. Participants will also explore innovative approaches to assessment—such as Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs)—and their role in measuring readiness for independent clinical practice.

This interactive webinar will explore the rationale for ongoing curriculum evaluation, emphasizing the importance of educational quality, accreditation standards and alignment with emerging patient and societal needs. Ideal for educators, administrators and curriculum developers, this webinar aims to bridge the gap between feedback and meaningful educational innovation.

    Learning Objectives

    • Describe the rationale behind curriculum reviews in dental education, including the need to maintain educational quality, accreditation compliance and responsiveness to evolving oral health needs.
    • Evaluate different approaches to assessment, such as EPAs, and their role in measuring readiness for independent practice.
    • Assess how institutional challenges—such as faculty development, resource allocation and financial sustainability—impact curriculum reform.
    • Propose strategies for fostering interprofessional collaboration, integration of soft skills training and alignment of curricula with societal and patient needs.

This webinar will discuss the effects of global events on U.S. dental workforce composition and explore the idea of deglobalization and its effects on U.S. dental workforce composition (i.e., the mix of U.S.-trained faculty vs. faculty trained outside the US).

Recent data from the 2024 ADEA Dental Faculty Demographic Census reveal a substantial increase in open dental faculty positions between 2018–2019 and 2022–2023. While local economic pressures certainly contribute to this concerning trajectory, we propose that broader global forces may also play a critical role. Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide economic downturns and emerging deglobalization dynamics likely influence the stability and composition of the U.S. dental faculty workforce.
