The transition from student to educator is a pivotal step in sustaining a strong and diverse health professions faculty workforce. Yet, many new educators report feeling unprepared for the responsibilities of teaching, mentoring and academic leadership. This session will present findings from a study exploring the academic, clinical and leadership experiences that influence faculty members’ decisions to enter academia and their sense of readiness for the educator role. Participants will gain insights into common formative experiences that can inform early exposure opportunities, strengthen mentorship structures and guide targeted professional development strategies to support the educator pipeline in dentistry and dental hygiene.
Learning Objectives
- Identify common academic, clinical and leadership experiences that faculty report as influential in their transition from student to educator.
- Analyze the barriers and facilitators that affect students’ preparedness and decision-making when considering academic career pathways.
- Apply evidence-based strategies for integrating early exposure, mentorship and professional development opportunities to strengthen faculty recruitment and retention in dental and dental hygiene education.
