Beyond Safe: How to Walk the Talk

This webinar will introduce the Columbia University LGBTQ+ Guide: Resources to Foster an Affirming Community for LGBTQ+ Faculty & Staff. The guide, the first of its kind, is a unique resource for other academic institutions seeking fresh ideas and strategies to enhance diversity and inclusion, and to stimulate future work to enhance the climate and resources for LGBTQ+ faculty and staff as well as students.  The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement at Columbia University aims to promote and nurture a vibrant climate of inclusive excellence through creative collaboration with University partners, building upon and expanding the portfolio of the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion. The office’s primary focus is on fostering faculty development, diversity, planning and community-building initiatives that will allow faculty to thrive. Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the process of creating an institutional guide for the LGBTQ+ community of students, faculty, staff and patients to further the broader social justice mission.
  • Explore the impact of promoting an LGBTQ+-affirming campus climate for recruitment, mentoring, advancement and overall well-being.
  • Describe strategies to foster an inclusive climate and discuss ways to implement those strategies to support LGBTQ+ community at your institution.

Herminio Perez, D.MD, M.B.A., Ed.D.

Dir. of Student Affairs, Diversity & Inclusion

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Dental Medicine

Dr. Perez serves as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Diversity & Inclusion, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine,

In addition to his academic and administrative responsibilities, He is a member of the Diversity Leadership Council at Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences and Member of the American Dental Association Board of Trustees' Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Dr. Perez has been an active member of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and has served as Chair of the Student Affairs/ Financial Aid Section (AFASA). Currently, he holds the position of Councilor for the ADEA PRIDE Section, and Chair-Elect of the ADEA Leadership Institute Alumni Association Board (ADEA LIAA). Dr. Perez has several research interests related to improving dental students' experience during their academic years.

Dennis A. Mitchell, D.D.S., M.P.H.

Executive Vice President for University Life, Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement

Dennis A. Mitchell, D.D.S., M.P.H., serves as the Executive Vice President for University Life and Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement at Columbia University, and Professor of Dental Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. Since joining in 1991, he has shown a deep commitment to the oral health needs of underserved populations in the communities surrounding Columbia. Mitchell served as the first diversity-focused dean at a U.S. dental school in his role as Senior Associate Dean for Diversity for the College of Dental Medicine. As Senior Vice Provost, he implements the programmatic elements of the University’s financial commitment to enhance the diversity of the faculty. Upon his August 2021 appointment to EVP, Mitchell continues his longstanding mission of diversifying the academy at every level. Mitchell received his B.A. from Cornell University in 1984, his D.D.S. degree from Howard University in 1989, and his M.P.H. from Columbia University in 1996.

Walter Bockting, Ph.D.

Director of the Program for the Study of LGBTQ+ Health

Dr. Bockting is a Clinical Psychologist and Director of the Program for the Study of LGBT Health at the New York State Psychiatric Institute / Columbia Psychiatry and the Columbia University School of Nursing. His research interests include identity development across the lifespan, transgender health, and LGBTQ+ aging. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the New York Community Trust, and a number of other private foundations. He is currently the Principal Investigator of three large NIH-funded studies: Project AFFIRM, a longitudinal, multi-site study of transgender identity development across the lifespanConvoy Q, examining the role of social networks in cognitive aging of LGBTQ+ adults and their cisgender, heterosexual counterpartsand a new investigation of the quality of life of trans and gender nonbinary individuals following gender-affirming surgery.

Dr. Bockting is an internationally known expert in gender-affirming healthcare as well as in the mental health and psychosocial adjustment of transgender, gender non-binary and gender-diverse children, adolescents, adults, and their families. He is the Editor of six volumes on gender and sexual health, and has published more than one-hundred articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr Bockting is a past president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and a past president and Fellow of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. In 2010-11, Dr Bockting served on the Institute of Medicine Committee of the National Academies whose work culminated in the IOM Report on the Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Better Understanding.
