Join us in this webinar as we explore the outcomes of student awareness, the latest research on dental education practice transition resources, highlight innovative approaches to practice readiness and provide practical strategies to help educators and students navigate the challenges of entering professional practice.
Dental graduates are entering a rapidly changing practice landscape shaped by corporate dentistry, evolving educational models and rising awareness of the importance of business acumen. While students report confidence in their clinical training, many feel underprepared for the transition into practice management, decision-making and career planning. Early-career transitional resources for graduating dental students and recent graduates exist, but they are neither adequate nor focused nor optimally utilized in dental schools or by local, state and national societies. Dental schools, alumni relations and organized dentistry have a collaborative opportunity to increase and tailor resources and awareness to support graduating dental students and early-career dental graduates in positioning themselves for successful transitions.
This webinar will explore the outcomes of student awareness, the latest research on dental education practice transition resources, highlight innovative approaches to practice readiness and provide practical strategies to help educators and students navigate the challenges of entering professional practice.
Learning Objectives
- Identify key stressors and gaps students experience when transitioning from preclinical education to clinical training and into early-career opportunities.
- Evaluate current institutional and organizational resources designed to support dental graduates and assess their adequacy, relevance and utilization to strengthen graduates’ career readiness.
- Propose practical approaches to support dental students and recent dental graduates in navigating business, financial and professional challenges in diverse career pathways.

This webinar will discuss the effects of global events on U.S. dental workforce composition and explore the idea of deglobalization and its effects on U.S. dental workforce composition (i.e., the mix of U.S.-trained faculty vs. faculty trained outside the US).
Recent data from the 2024 ADEA Dental Faculty Demographic Census reveal a substantial increase in open dental faculty positions between 2018–2019 and 2022–2023. While local economic pressures certainly contribute to this concerning trajectory, we propose that broader global forces may also play a critical role. Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide economic downturns and emerging deglobalization dynamics likely influence the stability and composition of the U.S. dental faculty workforce.

Description:
As dental education continues to evolve in response to dynamic oral health landscapes, curriculum reviews play a critical role in ensuring programs remain relevant, rigorous and responsive. This webinar will provide an in-depth look at the different types of curricula used in dental education programs and examine the variety of curriculum review processes identified through our analysis of institutional data. We will highlight who participates in curriculum reviews, what tools and data sources are used, the role of key stakeholders and how findings are synthesized to guide meaningful reform.
