Improving Workplace Climate: Empowering Individuals to Become Active Bystanders - Open to all ADEA members

This interactive session describes different types of exclusionary behaviors that affect recruitment and retention into STEM fields and academic oral health communities, and, the academic practices and institutional structures that allow for exclusionary behaviors to persist. The session also provides training in personal intervention strategies to protect and support targets of exclusionary behaviors. As a result of this session, participants will be able to identify: 

  1. Different ways in which harassment, bullying, and other types of exclusionary behaviors can manifest in research and academic oral health environments; 
  2. Strategies for bystander intervention and 
  3. Resources for cultural change in academic institutions and professional societies.

All participants will be provided handouts that describe the bystander intervention strategies and list resources related to the issues discussed. Participants will be asked to complete a short survey at the end of the workshop to provide feedback to the facilitators.

This session is open to all ADEA members. However, due to the nature of the topic, Deans, Allied or Advanced Education Program Directors and ADEA Board Members should instead plan to attend the training on Dec. 6, 2023 from noon-3:00 p.m.

Dr. Marin-Spiotta is Professor of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to her research in biogeochemistry and biogeography, Dr. Marin-Spiotta studies and implements strategies to engage faculty in workplace climate change through bystander intervention, research ethics, and anti-racist pedagogy. She is the Lead Principal Investigator of the ADVANCEGeo Partnership and Faculty Co-director of the Wisconsin Inclusion in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute.

Alistir Rogers, Ph.D.

Interim Department Chair and Group Leader, Terrestrial Ecosystem Science & Technology Group, Environmental and Climate Sciences Department

Brookhaven National Laboratory

Dr. Alistair Rogers is a plant physiologist at Brookhaven National Laboratory with over 25 years of field-work experience. Most recently, his research has taken him to the Arctic tundra in Alaska, and to the tropical forests of Panama and Brazil where his work aims to improve understanding and model representation of plant physiology in global climate models. After hosting an ADVANCEGeo workshop at Brookhaven in 2021, Dr. Rogers decided to join the ADVANCEGeo team.
