The ADEA Climate Study Strategic Roadmap, will focus on the following goals over the next three years: 1) Humanistic and Inclusive Environment, 2) Equitable Policies and Practices and 3) Bias and Discrimination. Drawing on 10 years of experience as Associate Editor (Journal of Child Neurology, Pediatric Neurology) and 3 years as Editor-in-Chief (Seminars in Pediatric Neurology), Dr. Pedro Weisleder will share in this webinar the attributes that journal editors look for in a journal reviewer.

If authors are the lifeblood of scientific publishing, journal reviewers are the vessels through which the blood runs. Journal editors relay on the expertise of reviewers to ensure that the papers they publish are scientifically sound, report on experiments that were carried in a manner that protected patients, human subjects or animals, and offer information that can be used to improve the life of patients everywhere. The role of journal reviewer is time-consuming, and at times frustrating. So, why agree to review a paper?

Skillful peer reviews represent a valuable contribution to the field of study. In fact, expert reviewers help advance science. Being asked to review manuscripts is evidence of professional reputation. Reviewing manuscripts creates an opportunity for professional advancement. Finally, prompt and effective reviews can lead to an invitation to join a journal’s editorial board or more.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Explain why reviewing scientific papers helps improve research and writing skills
    • Describe why reviewing papers helps advance individual fields of study
    • Explain what journal editors would like to see in a review
